TYROS (formerly known as Digital Storytelling Asia) is a social enterprise established in 2010. An early adopter of digital storytelling in Asia, Tyros is part of a worldwide network of (digital) storytellers.

Long before we discovered digital storytelling, however, we were already communicating through stories and helping others communicate through stories. The digital platform just expanded our horizons.

We coach anybody in this digital age to communicate meaning through storytelling.

We coach.

Storytelling is both a science and an art. We design experiences that will bring about your desired learning outcome. We teach communications – oral, written, presentation and digital storytelling.

We create.

Educational Technology Professor Emeritus, Jason Ohler said, “The only one thing I know for certain about the technologies that await us in the future is that we will find ways to tell stories with them.

Whatever your need, we can help you collect or create stories:

  • Interviews for magazine, web articles
  • Biography
  • Photo journal
  • Digital stories or video tributes

We connect.

Through storytelling, we:

  • Empower sales and marketing personnel or business owners to communicate with clients and stakeholders
  • Facilitate team building
  • Create inter-generational dialogues that link youth and seniors
  • Create inter-cultural conversations that help people of different cultures and nationalities understand and work better with each other
  • Help families listen to each other: spouses, parent-child bonding
  • The possibilities are endless

We facilitate training that enhance storytelling and communications

  • Soft skills – LIFELONG LEARNING, public speaking and presentation skills, interviewing
  • Story Craft – writing, editing – for articles, newsletters, blogs, biographies, digital story scripts
  • Media – photography, videography, graphic design
  • Software – MovieMaker, iMovie, Audacity, iPad, PowerPoint
  • Basic computer skills – surfing the web, social media, blogging

Communications at its best shares meaning and can facilitate transformation.

It’s not only about the passing on of information (although it includes that). It’s not only the expression of opinions (because we all have our ways of looking at things).

It is about sharing not just the what and the how, but the WHY.

The heart must be engaged for true communications and transformation to take place.

Although the connections are not always obvious, personal change is inseparable from social and political change.” ― Harriet Lerner

Transformation happens when you, your stakeholder or clients experiences:

  • A “wow” moment when I change from the who-I-am today to who-I-want-to-be tomorrow
  • A movement from us versus them to WE AND US together
  • An “aha” moment when the listener says, “Now I understand you! I feel with you! I come alongside you.”

You can learn to create awareness and win advocates through storytelling.

Bernard Lee

Educator / Storytelling Coach

SONY DSC
Bernard is a director of Tyros Pte Ltd. He is based in Vietnam where he is Academic Director of iCan International Education. His work there includes curriculum development, teacher training and professional training for resorts and CEOs. Among his clients are The Nam Hai and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications.

Bernard has more than 25 years of teaching and training experience. He has taught at various institutions and conducted training workshops in the USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, China, Malaysia and the Philippines. His expertise includes leadership and motivational training, cross-cultural intelligence development, public speaking and presentations, spoken English competence training for speakers of other languages and teacher-training for English language teaching.

An intuitive and creative teacher, trainer and communicator, Bernard has been in education in many and varied situations since 1983. His students range from primary school children to university undergraduates to government ministers, and from native speakers of English to second language learners of English to foreign language learners of English. His teaching and training has been well-received in large groups of more than 500, in regular class sizes of between 25-35 and in one-on-one personal mentoring arrangements.

However, he most enjoys smaller groups of between 10 to 25 as such arrangements allow him to creatively use various learning styles and contexts to teach and train. In particular, he is adept at using natural situations or contrived situations (like a cross-cultural community service trip) to teach and train communicative use of language, relational skills and values formation.

Bernard holds an MA in English Language, a post-graduate Diploma in Education, and a specialist Instructor’s Certificate in the Principles and Methods of Teaching Spoken English. Bernard is also a certified administrator and trainer for the MBTI and DISC instruments.

Bernard is also director of GATES Global, a firm offering training, consultation, and coaching in Cross Cultural Intelligence.

Lilian
Lilian is a director of Tyros Pte Ltd. She is a highly motivated educator who meticulously researches, studies and prepares for teaching or training encounters. Her teaching and training methods vary from more traditional pen and paper approaches to the recent and popular digital delivery instruments. Having had formal teaching experience under the Ministry of Education with the weakest students (Kim Seng Technical School) and with the most talented students (Raffles Institution Gifted program and Raffles Junior College ASEAN Scholars), Lilian is able to customize teaching methodologies to suit the specific learner.

Her students included engineering students at the Singapore Polytechnic, engineers at General Motors Inc, scholars under the ASEAN and A*Star scholarship programmes and pre-service and in-service teachers. Lilian’s interest in storytelling led her to not only participate in and help develop training for digital storytelling, but also to be trained to produce short films.

Together with her husband Bernard, Lilian is in the process of developing an online portal to help learners and teachers search the Internet for the best free English lessons that match specific learning needs.

Lilian is based in Vietnam where she works as a Teacher Trainer and Supervisor in iCan International Education. There she teaches English, conducts TESOL training to certify teachers and provides expertise and mentoring for younger teachers and trainers to develop curriculum, prepare effective lesson plans and produce training videos.
